Ghent University is a public university in Belgium with a high-standing reputation of collaborating on international collaborative projects. The university is one of the fastest growing European universities in terms of research capacity and productivity, and its commitment to European research excellence is reflected by the recent extension of the EU Team in its Research Coordination Office; the department overseeing, guiding and administering research projects. In Horizon Europe, already 280 projects have started with the participation of UGent. UGent is the project coordinator and WP6 and WP7 leader. UGent and specifically the partners included have coordinated and have been partner in multiple large scale multi-country research projects in SSA. They have extensive expertise and experience for the WP6 and 7 tasks, and are supported by the UGent central services. Moreover, UGent contributes substantially to all other WPs with specific expertise and will serve as the coordinator of the entire project. Prof. Gabriël and Prof. Levecke have been leading multiple large-scale studies on control of T. solium in SSA from a One Health perspective and STH, respectively; including implementation research. UGent is also WHO Collaborating Centre for monitoring of drug efficacy against STH. Dr. Vande Velde is a social scientist with expertise in communication and implementation research. Dr. Saelens is an early-stage researcher with expertise in T. solium and a keen interest to work in the Global South. Prof. Devleesschauwer has extensive experience is cost effectiveness/utility studies and burden assessments and has developed the disease transmission model CYSTISIM.

Meet the people behind the project

The university of Zambia

Prof. Sarah Gabriël

Prof. Sarah Gabriël (DVM, PhD) is currently heading the Laboratory of Foodborne Parasite Zoonoses in the Department of Translational Physiology, Infectiology and Public Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University. She has been working for 25 years in the Global South (South Africa, Zambia, Gabon). Her research applies a multidisciplinary, One Health approach, within Belgium, the European Union, but especially so in the Global South. Development and evaluation of diagnostic tools and control/elimination strategies are keywords in her research.

Prof. Bruno Levecke

Dr. Levecke is a trained veterinarian and holds both a PhD degree in Veterinary Sciences and an MSc degree in Statistical Data Analysis from Ghent University. He has been has been working extensively in the STH arena in areas such as diagnosis and drug efficacy. He is currently the head of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Monitoring Drug Efficacy against soil-transmitted helminths.

Dr. Fiona Vande Valde

Fiona Vande Velde is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Translational Physiology, Infectiology and Public Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University, in Belgium. She supports the coordination of the Consortium of Experts in Neglected Tropical Diseases. Through behavioural assessment and participatory research, she aims at enforcing health behaviour, adapted to local culture and context.

Dr. Carmen Vidal Moreno de Vega

Carmen Vidal Moreno de Vega is a postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratory of Foodborne Parasite Zoonoses in the Department of Translational Physiology, Infectiology and Public Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University. She is a biologist with an MBS in infectious and tropical diseases and a PhD in Veterinary Science. She has a background in transcriptomics and metabolomics as well as experience in European-funded projects.

Chloé Westerlund

Chloé Westerlund is a PhD researcher at the department of Translational Physiology, Infectiology and Public Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University. She obtained her Master’s degree in Veterinary medicine with a focus on the Global South. During her studies she gained international experience in veterinary care, field research and community outreach in Zambia, Bolivia and Zimbabwe.

Tanja Pien

Tanja Pien has been an administrative officer at Ghent University since 2019, bringing over 30 years of experience in financial and general administration. She provides financial support for a diverse portfolio of Flemish, Federal, and international projects, ensuring accurate coordination and smooth operational processes. She contributes to international collaborations, assists in educational activities, and supports course and meeting organization. In addition, she plays an active role in student services.
